Sede Boqer Colloquium Presents:
Performing The Homeland: Contesting the Boundaries of Moroccan Jewish Identity in America
The role of music has been central to defining a new diaspora identity within the Jewish community. This talk focuses on Moroccan Jews in Brooklyn, and the role of liturgical practice in memorializing the homeland and galvanizing the boundaries of a distinctive, transnational Jewish ethnic community. This presentation highlights the juxtaposition of several Jewish diaspora identities (Orthodox Jewish, Israeli, and Sephardic)—a layered diaspora consciousness— by exploring the interplay of ritual, soundscape, and aesthetics—melodic, vocal, and rhythmic.
Dr. Samuel Torjman Thomas will give a guest lecture on Jewish life and musical culture in the Diaspora
